INDIGENOUS SPRING: Permanent mobilisation for life and democracy
In memory of our ancestors, who gave their lives for us to exist. Of the enchanted ones who brought us here to continue their struggles in defence of our bodies, lands and territories, our identity and differentiated cultures, we say to the Brazilian and international society that we are in permanent mobilisation in defence of LIFE and DEMOCRACY.
Our struggle is not only to preserve the life of our peoples but of all humanity, today seriously threatened by the policy of extermination and devastation of Mother Nature promoted by economic elites – who inherited the greed of colonial, mercantilist and feudal expansionist power – and rulers such as the genocidal Jair Bolsonaro.
The Articulation of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib) began the Struggle for Life camp in Brasilia on 22 August and reinforces in this letter that we will continue to mobilise until 2 September 2021 to fight for our rights. Today, this is the largest mobilization in the history of indigenous peoples, in the Federal Capital, and reinforces our cry: Our history does not begin, in 1988!
Even putting our lives at risk, in the still seriously dangerous context of Covid-19, we are here to tell the invaders of our territories that they will not pass, even in the face of intense attacks on our fundamental rights guaranteed by the Federal Constitution of 1988.
We occupy the networks, the streets, the villages and Brasilia to fight for democracy, against the racist and anti-indigenous agenda that is underway in the Federal Government and in the National Congress and to accompany the judgment in the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which will define the future of our peoples.
During the month of June 2021, we held the Rise for the Earth, initiating our first face-to-face activities, in Brasilia, to confront the worsening violence against indigenous lives. From then on, we began a new cycle of struggles that, since March 2020, have taken place virtually and within our territories, due to the pandemic.
Because we are facing many viruses, including Bolsonaro’s genocidal policy, we started our ‘Indigenous Spring’ that intends to occupy Brasilia constantly, in 2021, in addition to following in the social networks and in the mobilized territories.
MANIFESTO STRUGGLE FOR LIFE
We are children of the Earth! And the Earth is not Ours, it is we who are part of it. It is the womb that generates us and the lap that welcomes us. That is why we give our lives for her. In our tradition there has never been this story of regulating who is or is not the owner of the land, because our relationship with it has never been one of property. Our possession is collective, as is our usufruct. This is the basic foundation of our existence, which the ignorance of the culture of the so-called western civilisation does not understand, even after 521 years.
INDIGENOUS FUTURES
The most central agenda of the Struggle for Life mobilisation is related to the trial by the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF), which is expected to be the most important process of the century for the lives of indigenous peoples. The Court will analyze the repossession action filed by the government of Santa Catarina against the Xokleng people, referring to the Ibirama-Laklãnõ Indigenous Land (TI), where the Guarani and Kaingang peoples also live. Under the status of “general repercussion”, the final decision made by the trial will serve as a guideline for the federal government and all instances of Brazilian justice system, as well as a reference to all processes, administrative procedures and legislative projects regarding the indigenous land demarcation procedures.
